Unasked FAQs « Thread Started on Apr 12, 2009, 3:37pm »
Welcome, members new and old. Here is a thread which answers, hopefully, all your questions. If you still have some, post them as a new thread in this board, and we'll do our best to answer them.
How do I play?
In DOTW, we pretend we are wild horses. Your 'character' is essentially the horse you'd like to be. A 'post' is the actions, thoughts, conversations, etc. we imagine our character to be doing. Yes, it is all written down. The only images are the ones merely depicting your character.
So how do I join?
Once you've registered on the forum itself, you need to join your character. You join on this board, which is the Joining board, and the first board to appear on the main page. You need to create a new thread and fill out the form which appears at the top of the page, between the head image, and where you're writing your post. This thread should help you if you have any issues with the form. From there, you wait for an admin to accept your character. The admins are in a box on the left hand side of any page on DOTW. If you post elsewhere in character before you are accepted, your posts will be deleted. This excludes the OOC board, or this board.
Now that I've joined, where do I post?
Typically, new members go to the Claiming Creek first, where you create a thread and wait for a reply, or replies. This applies to mares, stallions, and foals. Other alternatives are to apply directly to a land, or to post in The Free Land.
Should I role-play in first or third person?
Honestly, I don't think it matters if you post in third person, second person, or first. You can even post in poetry, though people are less inclined to reply if you do that ;]
So, what about magic and mythological characters?
Simply no. No characters are allowed to possess any kind of magic or supernatural ability. This means no super strength, super speed, telepathy, vampires, unicorns, pegasi, etc. You may have your character believe they have one of the above, so long as they do not in reality.
Am I allowed a zebra?
Yes, yes you are. However, bear in mind that is a zebra mates with a horse, the resulting newborn will be sterile, ie, cannot breed.
Can I become an admin?
Don't ask me this, as the people who become admins are people who I trust, enjoy talking to, and can RP well. If I feel we need a new admin, I will offer the position to the most likely candidate.
Why do some people have coloured names and I don't?
These currently go according to the rank of a member. Anyone whose first character hasn't been accepted has a bright green name. Pale orange means that the first character has been accepted. Pink means the player RPs a King or Queen of a land, and purple means they'll make an image for your characters if you ask. Blue means that they moderate one board on the forum, and teal is an overall admin.
Why is there a land without a king in it?
In DOTW, we don't require each land to be led by a king. It can either be a King or a Queen - and if there are both, they do not have to be mates.
How can I get my own land?
The most obvious way to get your own land is to challenge the current leader of a land to a battle for the land. This takes place in The Fighting Flat and are subject to the guidelines and rules associated with this board. Generally, your character finds a home through the Claiming Creek - a member of a herd should invite your character to join that herd. Finally, you can also post directly in a land and ask for admission to that land. This doesn't happen very often, and is more likely to be a stallion rather than a mare. It's also reasonably unadvised without a prior agreement. Once you are part of a herd, you may invite others to join the herd, fight for position, etc.
Articblade is being mean to me.
Articblade is a friend of mine. He's nicer than the sometimes appears, especially if he's alerting someone to things they can improve in their writing. He comes from the fanfiction world, not RP, so if anyone cares to attempt to understand, this is method of taking out frustration from terrible writers: [link]. If he's replied to your thread with something sarcastic, or involving imagined violence, you may wish to ask him how to avoid it in the future. If you're very upset about it, come to me and I'll tell him he's been mean. I am, of course, trusting he won't go too far with this, and that he will be able to help people improve their writing.
Still have a problem with something? Create a thread and ask us. If I've tried to answer your question in this, and have failed, I'll do my best to re-write it so that you can understand it =]
You challenge for it. If you'd like an example of this, see the thread Ashe started in East Sylva. Or, the point of the Claiming Creek is for someone to invite your character to live in the land they live in. Or, you could go straight to a land and ask to live there. This is generally unadvised unless there's a prior agreement, but it isn't against the rules. As there are no empty lands at the moment, one of the first two options is your best bet.

If I challenge another stallion for land at the...War flats was it called? Anyway if I win, does he take his herd and find a new home or do I take over the herd? Also, if I have my own land I can start my own herd right?
Thanks!
Oh! Also, I noticed some players(stallions mostly) seem to "own" their mares in a way so they can't leave the herd. How do you do this?

If you live in a land, you can collect mares for the overall herd. If you win, the herd stays in the land, unless you kick out the original stallion and his mate/foal decide to go with him. Remember, a mare can rule a land, too.
And that's because technically, they can't, except the players of the mares are either unaware of the fact they can fight for freedom, which is their own fault for not reading the rules, are fine with it, or figure their mare couldn't win a fight against the stallion.

Snowstorm, you've already been accepted, so obviously, it really doesn't matter whether you use the form provided, or your own form, so long as everything's covered
Steph, asking is good and means you don't get yelled at for making mistakes Um yeah, it's fine if a stallion breeds before he has a land. The stallion doesn't have to own a land, he can be a resident in one, or he can be in the Grey Lands, etc.

Simply post a new thread in the land, mention specifically you're looking for the leaders [in general, ironyyy]. So basically a normal post, with the specific intention of meeting a lead and asking to live in the land.

Originally, we didn't have seasons, then Verdy dearest updated the season every Sunday, her time, and now we have it set to every other Sunday, the weather will update, but I believe a whole season lasts about 2 to three weeks real time.

... I kind of got lazy and started updating the weather every second week, but still figured that 2 updates per season is better than just one. And it means people can actually finish a thread within a single season D: ... That's what you were asking? Is there something I should fix up to make it clearer, or what?
